Vitus Joyeux and Elijah Jn Baptiste on Scuba Diving in Saint Lucia

A World Made by Many

Meet Sugar Beach divers Vitus Joyeux and Elijah Jn Baptiste and discover Saint Lucia scuba diving, its reefs, and their approach to conservation.

Elijah Jn Baptiste has lived in Saint Lucia his whole life, growing up in Soufrière, the same small, French-influenced town the resort calls home. Everyone knows everyone and everyone is connected, he says.

Before his days were filled with running the diving program at Viceroy Sugar Beach, he worked as a Marine Ranger with the Soufrière Marine Management Area and worked as an instructor with another resort, spending years diving across the Caribbean.

He describes his home the way someone does when they've never stopped noticing it: the Pitons, a botanical garden, and a set of warm waterfalls found nowhere else on the island, fed by a dormant volcano, Piton Waterfall, just a ten-minute drive from the resort, along with Superman's Waterfall, Toraille Waterfall, and Diamond Waterfall. When it comes to the work itself, “You're connecting with nature, you're connecting with the water,” he says. “It's a beautiful environment to work in."

Discovering Saint Lucia's Underwater World

Elijah runs Sugar Beach's water sports and scuba program, a role built as much around safety as it is around wonder. But what he's chasing for a guest is a specific, first-time feeling. "What I would like divers to leave with, after experiencing the underwater world, is that moment of ‘Yes, I did it,’” he says. "I hope people walk away with lasting memories. Not just meeting expectations, but exceeding them.”

Vitus and Elijah, divers at Sugar Beach

Elijah is candid about what the place, and the work, mean to him personally. "It has actually humbled me," he says. "Just growing up, seeing what it has to offer, and not taking it for granted.” As for the diving itself, "It's shaped me into being someone that is more focused, someone that wants to share the experience I learned onto others,” he says. He credits the ocean directly with teaching him patience. "The sea is so powerful,” he adds.

Being underwater, he says, feels like meditation, "a place of peace” where you just enjoy and bask in the moment. “Even the simplest thing, just enjoying the bubbles, the sound of the bubbles, is so tranquil and peaceful." He describes closing his eyes underwater and simply hovering.

Decades of Diving Knowledge at Sugar Beach

Elijah’s partnership with Vitus dates back to before he joined the team at Sugar Beach. "He was one of the first instructors,” Elijah recalls. “When you heard of scuba diving, you would hear names like Vitus. He loves the ocean, and I learned so much from him. I always enjoyed watching him.”

Between the two of them, he points out, there's a striking amount of institutional memory built up on the one reef, with a combined 62 years of experience – Vitus with 41 years and Elijah with 21. “You have a lot of wealth, a lot of knowledge between the two of us,” Elijah adds.

Why Protecting the Reef Matters

In his mind, conservation is inseparable from the experience he's building for guests, starting with early childhood education. "Everything is all connected,” he says. “It's all a cycle. If you destroy the reef, you destroy the aquatic life.” For Elijah, letting people experience the reef firsthand is itself a form of protecting it. Guests who have experienced what's down there tend to become the ones asking others to take care of it.

Explore Saint Lucia Beneath the Surface

Elijah has a way of describing the hush beneath the surface that makes you want to see it for yourself. At Sugar Beach, that invitation is easy to accept.

Our Discover Scuba Diving experience is your introduction to the reefs Elijah knows best — fields of coral, bright sponges, and the quick flicker of parrotfish. The dive team handles the details, leaving you free to watch the underwater world unfold.

For those who already know their way around a dive mask, Sugar Beach Reef sits just offshore. It’s close enough for a morning swim, rich enough to keep even Elijah and Vitus coming back. Spend an hour with them and you’ll see why every dive is different, and why this stretch of Saint Lucia is worth protecting.
