Sugar Beach Gives Back

St. Lucia Community Programs

Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort is committed to finding ways to meaningfully give back to both the local community and environment. Our programming includes events and activities where our guests can join us in community outreach.

Bouton Combined School Lunches & Hygiene Program
Guests at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort are helping to make life a little sweeter for the children of the Bouton Combined School. The school, which is located in an underprivileged community near the town of Soufriere, is facing financial challenges and has been unable to adequately accommodate its students. Now guests are playing their part in helping the school while at the same time having sweet treats of their own. Large candy jars have been placed in the Saltwood Restaurant where guests are invited to help themselves to sweets in return for a donation to the Bouton School resource center building project. The new building will provide additional classroom space and space for a computer lab.

In the past, the resort has also provided assistance with the school’s feeding program by providing lunches to youngsters—often the only nutritious meal they would enjoy each day.

Sugar Beach has also collaborated with Cutty Ranks Barber Shop in the nearby village of Soufriere to provide monthly haircuts and hygienic supplies to underprivileged boys of the Bouton RC Combined School.

Scholarship Program for Children of Sugar Beach Team Members
Sugar Beach runs a scholarship program for the children of team members which runs on a continuous basis. Every year, colleagues submit applications on the behalf of their children who have been successful in the Common Entrance Exam. The students with the highest scores are awarded the scholarships. Thereafter, the students and their parents sign a scholarship agreement which they benefit from throughout their secondary school education once they able to maintain the required academic average of 70% each school term.

Butlers' Recycling Program
The Butlers Department at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort has collaborated with local company BIO HELPS to initiate a recycling program for plastics, aluminum and cardboard. The initiative has been extended to the entire resort with all departments being encouraged to participate in this environmentally friendly venture. Sugar Beach is the only company that BIO HELPS has agreed to work with outside of the capital, Castries. The resort will be receiving data from BIO HELPS on the volume of waste collected from Sugar Beach to better shape future policy and green initiatives.

Local College Computer Donation
Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort has supported Sir Arthur Lewis Community College with the donation of computers to the tertiary institution. The technical branch of the College, named after Sir Arthur Lewis—one of two Nobel laureates from St Lucia—is responsible for the training of future I.T. specialists from all over the island.
