- Nearby: Soufrière, the Tet Paul Nature Trail, and the Pitons—those two volcanic spires that make every photo look like a postcard somebody staged.
St. Lucia isn’t the kind of island that politely waits for you to settle in. It makes itself clear right away—warm breezes, thick green hills, and that looming, cinematic presence of the Pitons like they were built for the camera.
Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort sits right where you’d want it to. Nestled between the rainforest and Anse des Pitons beach, it feels removed in the best way. It’s about twenty-eight miles from Hewanorra (UVF) International Airport on winding roads to get here. It’s not hard to find, but if there were ever the perfect place to lose yourself, this is it.
Day 1: Perfecting the Art of Arrival and a Deep Exhale
Arrival:
Arrival doesn’t feel like checking in. It feels like the day is loosening its grip.
The design is open-air and distinctly Caribbean—salt on the breeze, tropical blooms in the background, windows thrown wide.
If you’re in a beachfront bungalow, you’re a wide-open door away from the white sands of Sugar Beach. The crisp white room—with its king-sized four-poster and voile draping—is a nod to the resort’s signature colonial aesthetic. It’s luxurious, but what you’ll remember here is what’s outside: a private plunge pool, the Caribbean Sea steps away, the steady percussion of the waves, sun-dappled shadows created by rustling palms overhead.
Art:
Let your host handle the logistics—bags, dinner reservations—while you head out. Walking through the resort is a discovery of its own. It’s full of natural beauty, yes, but the surprise is the art. An original Andy Warhol here (Moon Walk). A Banksy there (Very Little Helps). Daniel Arsham’s Unearthed Bronze Eroded Melpomene, an enormous head partially submerged on the lawn. Each piece has a story to tell. And you can hear them on a guided audio art tour.
The Water:
The water is warm and clear, and the reef below is bright with coral gardens—plus the occasional sea turtle, squid, and schools of tropical fish. Grab a clear-bottom kayak and glide over it all, watching the underwater world slide past like a film beneath the surface.
Afterwards, find your place under the shade of the palms, sip on coconut water, feel the sand underfoot and the warmth of the sun, and relax. Here, it’s almost too easy to imagine a life where “I’m going for a swim” is a perfectly valid plan for the afternoon.
Then, wander barefoot back to your villa. If your accommodations are higher up the hillside, the shuttle has you covered.
Drinks and Dinner
As the sun starts to go golden, settle into a seat at the open-air Saltwood Bar. The backbar catches the last light—then the cocktails do the rest.
Dinner’s next door at Saltwood, the mood just as sublime. Go big if you want. Start with the Wagyu beef tartare and caviar, and move on to the whole roasted Branzino with toasted almond, soaked jasmine golden raisins, lemon, and basil oil. Or opt for a signature steak: USDA Prime Plus or Australian Wagyu, or both, with the steak tasting plate. We don’t need to tell you to take your time … that happens naturally here.
Day 2: Nature, Healing, and Taste
Tet Paul Nature Trail:
In the morning, start with the Tet Paul Nature Trail through the farming community of Chateau Belair. Along the way, your guide pauses, crushing a leaf between his fingers to release the sharp scent of lemongrass. He talks about the Amerindian art of turning cassava into farine, and points out the wide variety of exotic fruit trees along the trail—avocado, guava, and soursop, to name a few. Meanwhile, the views of the Pitons are doing the heavy lifting, and your attention might be elsewhere. On clear days, you can see Martinique and St. Vincent.
Soufrière and Sulphur Springs:
For a classic St. Lucia excursion, head into Soufrière, a nearby town that wears its charms openly. This is the kind of place that’s all colorful buildings and small streets, with a distinct feeling that people actually live here—because they do.
From here, you’re headed to the only drive-in volcano in the Caribbean. The Sulphur Springs and Mud Baths are located in the collapsed crater of a dormant volcano that last erupted in the 1700s. Tour the volcano to see gurgling mud pools and volcanic steam, take a mineral-rich, restorative soak in the hot springs and mud baths. It’s messy, and oddly satisfying. Then, rinse off under a natural 50-foot cascading rainforest waterfall in a moment that’s both refreshing and rehumanizing.
The Cocoa Mill
Back at Sugar Beach visit Cocoa Mill, a cottage hidden in the lush mountains, for a private chocolate making experience. Make your very own custom gourmet chocolate bars and truffles, crafted from rich, velvety island chocolate and finished by hand—yours—carrying on a storied history that traces back to St. Lucia’s indigenous peoples, the Arawak and Carib.
Jetty Burgers
Dinner should be easy after a day like this. Head to Jetty Burgers. Get a cold drink, order a burger. Don’t overthink it. Try the signature burger with iceberg lettuce, vine-ripened tomato, dill pickles, and 1K sauce. Or try the double spicy cheese jalapeño if you’re feeling adventurous.
Either way, Jetty Burgers are best enjoyed right on the pier—where the sea stretches endlessly from the base of the Pitons.
Snorkeling by Moonlight
When night falls, there’s more waiting beyond the shoreline—if you’re up for it. Snorkeling by moonlight is a different world. Slip into the bay under the moon’s glow and you’ll feel it almost immediately: the reef has changed shifts. The water looks darker, quieter, but the life beneath it is suddenly in motion. Coral and sponges take on an otherworldly edge. Shadows flicker. Tiny movements become entire scenes.
This is when the night feeders come out—lobsters and crabs edging along the rocks, shrimp darting in and out of hiding places, the occasional octopus ghosting across the sand. Keep your eyes open for the quick, elusive ones: squid, pufferfish, parrotfish, even scorpionfish tucked where you’d never notice in daylight.
In St. Lucia, snorkeling by moonlight feels magical, and a little humbling, and certainly unforgettable.
Day 3: Ocean Stories and Farewell
Fishing or Floating:
If you’re the type who wakes up thinking, “I can sleep when I’m back,” make the most of your last morning here and book a fishing charter in search of sailfish, tuna, snapper, or Mahi. Learn from the captain and crew—casting, reeling, the rhythm of it. And yes: there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing your fresh catch of the day wasn’t a menu decision—it was what you reeled in that morning.
If you prefer a gentler start, order a floating breakfast tray for your plunge pool and let the rhythm of the water guide you through the start of your day.
The Rainforest Spa
Then, make your way to the Rainforest Spa—a sanctuary nestled deep within the rainforest in the shadows of Petit Piton. The treatment rooms here are treehouses built on stilts perched high above the forest floor. Book the bespoke Augustinus Bader full body ritual, a head-to-toe rejuvenating treatment, and let calm hands put you back together before you re-enter the world.
Say Goodbye and Take a Memory Home With You
In the afternoon, take one last walk along the water’s edge to take it all in: the salt-tinged air, the lush rainforest, the majestic Pitons standing there like they always have, and always will.
A visit to our boutiques before you go is only fitting. Perhaps get that exquisite VIANNA BRASIL colored gemstone in citrine or amethyst from Harry Edwards Jewelers you’ve had your eye on. Maybe pick up the new Petite Plume x Viceroy Discovery Collection silk sleepwear. A souvenir that carries with it the lingering feeling of the sun, the sea, and the rainforest.
Escape to Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort
A stay at Sugar Beach, A Viceroy Resort is a reset—salt air, rainforest shade, the Pitons holding the horizon in place. It’s a place you’ll leave with a new understanding, and a few details you’ll keep returning to long after you’re home.
