Behind the Design: Viceroy at Ombria Algarve
Every great design tells a story. From local materials to heritage techniques, a well-designed space brings us closer to the history, culture, and people that shape our sense of place. Some hotels impress you at first glance. Others reveal themselves slowly—the curve of hand-thrown pottery, the texture of Burel wool, architectural forms that evoke the rustic charm of village life. At Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, design is less of a spectacle, and more akin to discovery.
Nestled on a hilltop under the golden Portuguese sun, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve draws from the region’s everyday beauty—whitewashed forms, clay tones, stone textures, patterns that nod to azulejos—and sharpens the lines for a modern eye. The result is surprising, yet grounded, and quietly unexpected.
Go behind the design of Viceroy at Ombria Algarve to uncover the time-honored techniques, master artisans, and design visionaries who shaped this unexpected sanctuary.
Who Designed Viceroy at Ombria Algarve?
- Lead Design Firm: WATG
- Architecture: Promontorio
- Interiors: Wimberly Interiors
- Golf Course: Jorge Santana da Silva
- Spa: Greg Payne
One of the best design hotels in Portugal’s Algarve, Viceroy at Ombria Algarve is the work of WATG, a global leader in luxury hospitality design. The firm’s in-house studio, Wimberly, handled interior finishes and styling, while Lisbon-based Promontorio lent their architectural prowess to the project. The result is a striking, minimalist design. It nods to local vernacular architecture through whitewashed walls, terracotta roofs, natural stone, and locally sourced wood, reflecting a steadfast commitment to contextual design and authentic materiality.
Greg Payne, the wellness visionary behind Estelle Manor, Beaverbrook, and Aman Resorts, consulted on the three-floor, 2,000-square-meter spa at Viceroy at Ombria Algarve. Here, private terraces, infinity-edge pools, and a restorative hydrothermal circuit invite stillness and relaxation.
Even the golf course has its own story. The resort’s 18-hole, GEO-certified course is the work of Jorge Santana da Silva, an acolyte and onetime mentee of legendary course designer Robert Trent Jones. Santana da Silva’s precisely contoured fairways and greens weave through the Algarve’s rolling hills and centuries-old trees, creating a Par-71 course that connects you to the landscape.

What Makes Viceroy at Ombria Algarve Unique?
Viceroy at Ombria Algarve is far from your ordinary Algarve luxury resort. Glimpsed from a distance, the hilltop property’s central tower and cluster of low-rise, whitewashed buildings (76 hotel rooms and 65 residences in all) appear as a verdant Algarvian village. A clean, modernist design language trades the preciousness of traditional luxury for genuine craft and authentic, regionally inspired elements such as cobblestones and clay tile.
Inside, each space reflects a seamless convergence of nature and culture. Generously sized windows and glazed doors offer captivating views of the lush hills, citrus groves, and flower-filled meadows just outside. Accents of walnut wood, leather, and limestone ground the design in an earthy, inviting warmth.
The Artisans Behind the Small Moments
Throughout the property, unique, artisan-crafted elements have been curated for small moments of delight. These include:
- Carolina Queiroz Cunha’s custom reception desk. The piece was inspired by the geometry of traditional Portuguese azulejos—those iconic blue-and-white ceramic tiles ubiquitous throughout the Algarve.
- Finnish sculptor Tuulia Penttilä’s handmade bird’s egg door knockers. Each one has been individually crafted from oak and sandstone.
- Jose Conceição’s handmade dishes and tableware. Pottery and ceramic enthusiasts should look for Conceição’s hands-on pottery workshop, hosted in a historic carriage house on the property.
How Does the Resort’s Design Reflect the Algarve Region?
The architecture and interior design at Viceroy at Ombria Algarve is rooted in the sights, sounds, and sensory experiences of Portugal's sun-drenched south coast. From the geometric latticework in the walls and on chimney stacks to the widespread use of taipa (rammed earth) in the resort’s 24 buildings, each element reflects the local materials, traditional techniques, and living history of the Algarve.
Take a refreshing dip in one of the resort’s four pools, each one lined with stunning Portuguese rosa aurora marble. Savor wood-fired dishes served on colorful, locally crafted ceramic dishware at Ombria Kitchen—you can even pick up a few pieces to take home from the hotel shop. Or grab a drink at the bar at Solalua, just off the resort’s central square, where illuminated walnut-wood tiles nod to traditional azulejos motifs, with a contemporary twist.
These clever moments of contextual design continue behind closed doors. Bright, inviting rooms and sensorial suites come appointed with locally crafted rugs and cozy Burel wool blankets sourced from Serra de Estrela sheep, a traditional rural breed of east-central Portugal. Richly patterned hydraulic tiles adorn the wall behind the beds, contrasting with custom-designed headboards crafted from trees felled during the resort’s construction.
How Does Viceroy at Ombria Algarve Incorporate Sustainable Design?
The resort represents a considered approach to sustainable resort design in Portugal’s Algarve. Arriving here, you’ll immediately understand why. Each of Viceroy at Ombria Algarve’s bioclimatic buildings looks out over sun-dappled hills and citrus groves—emblems of a world worth protecting.
Solar energy, supplemented by renewable geothermal sources, takes advantage of the region’s 320 days of sunshine a year. Rainwater collection is used to irrigate the resort grounds and the nearby golf course sustainably. 140 acres of ecologically protected land surround the hilltop resort, home to more than 700 newly planted oak trees and 1,800 linear meters of restored river habitat. An on-site plant nursery provides a place where local flora thrive—all part of our 1:5 replanting policy, where for every one plant removed during construction, five new ones are planted.
Design That Connects You to Place
Viceroy at Ombria Algarve’s design story doesn’t end in the lobby. It follows you through the corridors of patterned tile, into rooms layered with wool and wood, and out to squares and pathways that feel like they’ve always belonged to the hillside. This is the Algarve—not recreated, but interpreted—with craft and care in every frame.
