A Spectator's Guide to the 2026 Chicago Marathon
Travel
Plan your 2026 Chicago Marathon weekend with spectator spots, CTA tips, runner tracking advice, and post-race plans from Viceroy Chicago.
Come to the Chicago Marathon for one runner and you’ll end up cheering for dozens you’ve never met. Names are written across shirts. Strangers ring cowbells for strangers. Then, somewhere in the crowd, your runner finally sees you.
From Viceroy Chicago, race day starts close to home. The course passes near the hotel early in the morning and again as runners approach the halfway mark. That makes the Gold Coast a practical place to start.
Here’s how we’d spend the weekend.

When Is the Chicago Marathon?
The 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon takes place on Sunday, October 11, starting and finishing in Grant Park. Elite runners will set off at 7:30 a.m., followed by participant waves.
If you're coming to watch the pros, expect an early morning. Following a friend or family member? Find out which wave they’re in so you know when that sign you spent Saturday night making needs to be ready. Check the race-day schedule before the weekend for any changes.
Before Sunday, Make Time for the Expo
Race weekend starts before Sunday. The Abbott Health & Fitness Expo runs October 8–10 at McCormick Place's North Building. It's where participants pick up their race packets and browse running gear and official marathon merchandise. Admission is free, and supporters are welcome. You may find yourself weighing in on a commemorative jacket before anyone's run a mile.
A tip: Go Friday if you’re in town. Packet pickup will be behind you, giving the runner in your group one less commitment on Saturday.
Tuck into a pre-race dinner at Somerset that’s as good for your taste buds as it is for your glycogen stores. Viceroy’s flagship ground-floor restaurant will be serving up a special Carb Load Menu from October 9–11, featuring a lineup of handmade pastas, perfect for keeping spectators fueled while helping marathoners avoid hitting the wall.
For an adults-only evening before race day, we'd love to see you upstairs at Pandan. Our 18th-floor lounge serves Southeast Asian small plates and cocktails. Start with the crispy pork belly buns, served with pickled carrots and caramelized soy, and order the lobster dumplings for their coconut curry and crispy shallots. There's plenty to discuss besides split times, though the view might interrupt the conversation altogether.
Pandan welcomes guests 21 and older and is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Where to Watch the Chicago Marathon
For guests staying with us, the course near Division Street is the place to begin. LaSalle Street brings runners north early in the race, while nearby Wells Street takes them south later in the morning.
These viewing areas offer different ways to follow the race. Take a look at the 2026 course map to choose your spot before heading out.
Viewing area | Approximate race point | Why we’d choose it |
LaSalle Street near Division Street | Mile 4 | An early sighting within walking distance of Viceroy Chicago |
Wells Street near Division Street | Mile 12 | A later appearance near the hotel, with runners approaching halfway |
Chinatown near Cermak Road and Wentworth Avenue | Mile 21–22 | A chance to support your runner deep into the race |
Michigan Avenue near Roosevelt Road | Mile 26 | The final approach before runners turn toward the finish |
Start Near the Gold Coast
The first decision is LaSalle or Wells. Both are within walking distance of Viceroy Chicago, but you’ll see your runner at very different points in the race.
LaSalle Street near Division catches runners at roughly mile four, early enough that most still look happy to see you.
Wells Street near Division brings them back through the neighbourhood around mile 12. If your cheering section needs a little more time over coffee, this could be the better place to catch them as they approach halfway.
Viceroy tip: Choose one. The streets look close on a map, but race barriers have a way of lengthening the route.
Whichever you pick, decide beforehand which side of the street you'll stand on. “We’re near Division” sounds precise until your runner is moving past several thousand people.
Head to Chinatown for the Later Miles
Once your runner has made their way through the Gold Coast, take the Red Line south to Cermak-Chinatown.
The station puts you near the course at mile 21.5. Pick a specific spot near Cermak and Wentworth before the race so you can cheer your runner on.
Viceroy tip: Download the official Chicago Marathon app to track your runner and get their expected pace. That should give you a decent idea of when to get into position.
Choose Michigan Avenue for the Final Approach
For the home stretch, head toward Michigan Avenue and Roosevelt Road. This is the point of the race — nearing mile 26 — when runners need all the encouragement you can provide. Use whatever voice you have left to cheer them on.
Where to Meet Your Runner After the Race
General spectators can't gather at the actual finish line, so don't make Grant Park's finish chute your reunion plan.
Save the hug for the designated Runner Reunite area, which opens to spectators at 9:30 a.m. Choose a meeting point before Sunday. Neither of you will want to spend your post-race time describing which tree you're standing beside.
For a celebration before heading back to the Gold Coast, join the 27th Mile Post-Race Party in Butler Field, near Columbus Drive and Jackson Drive.
Spectators and runners are welcome from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and it's a perfect spot to catch up. After all, you saw a few seconds here and there. Your runner has the other 26.2 miles to fill you in on.
Back to the Gold Coast
When the group returns to Viceroy Chicago, settle in for dinner.
Somerset serves Mediterranean cooking downstairs. The menu draws on Southern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, with stone-fired breads and plenty worth passing around the table. Get the table started with roasted garlic hummus topped with spiced lamb, served with pita. Then make room for the ricotta cavatelli with duck sugo and crispy chive crumb, or the braised lamb shank with harissa butter sauce. You'll have plenty to pass around while your runner recounts what happened between your cheering spots.
Give the runner time to shower. Give everyone else time to sit down.
Chicago Marathon Spectator FAQs
There isn’t one best spot for every spectator, but guests staying at Viceroy Chicago have several good options. LaSalle Street near Division Street offers an early look at runners around mile 4, while Wells Street near Division catches them again around mile 12. For a later race sighting, head to Chinatown near Cermak Road and Wentworth Avenue around mile 21–22, or Michigan Avenue near Roosevelt Road as runners approach mile 26.
General spectators aren’t allowed inside the restricted finish-line area in Grant Park. If you want one final look at your runner before they finish, Michigan Avenue near Roosevelt Road is a better option. Arrange a separate meeting point in advance at the designated Runner Reunite area.
Use the official Chicago Marathon app to follow your runner’s progress on race day. It also helps to know their expected pace and starting wave beforehand so you can estimate when they’ll reach each of your planned cheering spots.
Race rules don’t allow participants to receive unauthorized refreshments or assistance from spectators, so leave fueling to the official aid stations and save the snacks for afterward.
Yes. The Abbott Chicago 5K takes place Saturday, October 10, 2026. It’s a separate event, so check registration availability if you’d like to run before taking your place on the sidelines Sunday.
Make a Weekend of It
There's plenty of Chicago left to enjoy after the medals are handed out. At Viceroy Chicago, our Gold Coast address puts you near the shops of the Magnificent Mile and the shores of Lake Michigan. Back in your room, floor-to-ceiling windows mean you can keep admiring the city with your feet firmly up. By then, a chair and a view of Chicago will probably sound pretty good.
