Viceroy at Ombria Algarve
Away from the coastline, life follows the land. Hives move with the bloom, while vines respond to heat and soil. Knowledge is carried forward through generations, shaped by those who continue the work today.
At Viceroy at Ombria Algarve, these are the people who bring the landscape closer, offering a way into the traditions and daily practices that have long defined this part of southern Portugal.
José Maria Martinez
José Maria Martinez learned beekeeping from his father, who learned it from his own. Today, the family tends around a thousand hives, moving them across the Algarve from orange blossom to lavender.
For José, the work is about knowing when to step back. The hive already knows what to do. At Ombria, he opens that world to guests, from a frame fresh from the hive to the honey it holds, and the wider role bees play in the landscape.
Catarina and Mário Santos
At Quinta do Tourais, Catarina and Mário Santos revived an abandoned vineyard, restoring the vines and letting the land set the pace. Two years later came their first wine.
That approach still defines the estate. Clay-rich soil, hot days and cool nights shape each bottle, with Catarina, Mário and their family working closely with what the vineyard gives them rather than forcing it into a fixed idea.
A World Made by Many
No place is made by one person. Behind every Viceroy is a community of people whose knowledge, craft and point of view give it character - shaped by years of practice and a deep connection to the places they call home.
A World Made by Many tells their stories. Across destinations and disciplines, meet the people behind our hotels, discover the work they know best, and explore more of their stories in the Viceroy Journal.
