Ed Viesturs has climbed all 14 of the world’s peaks above 26,000 feet without supplemental oxygen. He does not use the word conquer. The mountain, he says, decides whether you go up.

Three generations of José Maria Martinez’s family have kept bees on this land.

He is quick to point out that the bees manage perfectly well without him. At sunrise, before the heat settles in, he opens the hives, checks the frames and follows the rhythm of the colony. The honey is taken straight from the comb and jarred the same day.

Mário Santos returned to the land once farmed by his grandparent, restoring the abandoned vineyard in 2011.
